Venezuela – Fe y Alegría Turned Radio into a School for Young People

Talking about radio education in Venezuela today means thinking about Radiotuber's, a youth radio program produced and directed by the youth, from the youth and for the youth.

The radio education experience began on April 12, 2021, and has been maintained from Monday to Friday from 6 pm to 7 pm on 23 radio stations of the Fe y Alegría Movement.

Radiotuber's programming has several sections: "history, coconut burning, technology and innovation, and, you can talk", among others. The development of the program relies on the leadership of male and female youth; some have had successful training experiences with Toc Toc. They have produced 310 radio programs so far.

What does Radiotuber'soffer?

Radiotuber's aims to promote the values of spirituality, citizenship, co-existence, dialogue of knowledge, respect for and management of educational skills. In addition, it seeks to develop the youth's critical thinking ability.

The defence of human rights, the promotion of sustainable human development, care for Our Common Home, proper water management, proficiency in reading and writing, logical-mathematical thinking, use of technology, humanistic and Christian values, education and health are the fundamental axes of Radiotuber's content, production, and broadcasting.

Johnny Tovar, the program’s general producer, says that Radiotuber's has allowed young producers to experiment with different languages, narratives and formats, and creative ways of communicating and educating.

In addition to Johnny, Livia Martínez, Celeste García, Gabriel Valera, Samira Salas, Winderly Navarro, Aníbal Madruga, and Krshna Rojas comprise the team. Except for the general producer, who also serves as the team's father, nobody is over 16 years old.

How do you develop each program?

Teachers or experts on specific topics support the pedagogical process to expand themes or clarify doubts that the program hosts and target audience may have.

Once the day's topic is determined, they develop the script, structure its sections, and record the required inputs, including contemporary music, "but only those with good lyrics", as Gabo [Gabriel] asserts. Then, they edit, gather and perform on the radio network. They devotedly observe the program schedule—despite any rain, thunder or lightning—every Monday through Friday, from 6 pm to 7 pm.

Luis Sánchez, director of the Instituto Radiofónico Fe y Alegría, comments on the experience: "The radio has become a meeting point for young people, teachers and the community. The program promotes dialogue based on young people's daily life experiences. The radio has proved to be a fantastic and indispensable tool for recovering the voice of young people.

Radio Fe y Alegría also incorporate multimedia components and interactive modules to continue accompanying youth in the educational process by providing learning guides, direct counselling, podcasts, contests and training on radio production through the training program, ¡Toc Toc! Youth Narratives.

The Instituto Radiofónico Fe y Alegría (IRFA), founded in 1975, is an organisation belonging to the Movimiento de Educación Popular y de Promoción Social Fe y Alegría present in 21 states of the country. It develops radio broadcasts of literacy programs for youth in primary and secondary education and technical secondary education.
