Ketakandriana (Ke) Rafitoson is the Executive Director of Transparency International in Madagascar and coordinates the Publish What You Pay coalition in the country. She speaks to Séverine Deneulin, Director of International Development at the Laudato Si’ Research Institute, about her work and what Jesuit networks and institutions can do to promote integral ecology in the context of mining and just energy transitions.

In a statement released on Thursday 16 March 2023, Catholic organisations call on the European Parliament to adopt a Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) marking “a true turning point in how the EU addresses the threats that corporate activities pose to our Human Family and Common Home”.

In these years, more than 200 civil society organisations have contributed in community spaces, especially focused on the analysis of USAID investments in the region. Proposals have been generated for exchanges with officials from the US State Department, USAID, the White House and Congress.

“Rise and Raise” was the clarion call of Stan D’Souza SJ, the President of South Asia, at the inaugural Eucharist of a 3-day South Asian Social Justice and Ecology Annual Convention with the theme of “Celebrating Faith that does Justice” on April 14, 2023, in Ranchi, Jharkhand. There were around 135 participants, Jesuits and collaborators, from all 19 Provinces and 2 Regions.

On 17 April evening, JESC and the Group Passion for Europe organized a conference titled “What Hope for Europe? Rethinking the Christian Contribution.” About sixty attendants witnessed a very inspiring conference in the Chapel of the Resurrection and seventy attendants joined online.

In May, Jesuits from every Province and Region where the Society of Jesus is working will gather at the “Sanctuario de Loyola” in Spain for the 71st Congregation of Procurators, or “CP”. Announced in January of 2021, the CP was convoked by Fr. Arturo Sosa, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, in a letter to all Major Superiors of the Society.

For decades, numerous actors from civil society, academia, the Church and other Churches, human rights activists, organisations and migrants and refugees have been calling for a transformation of migration policies and structures that implement them in Mexico and throughout the continent.

In the years since Laudato si’, the Society of Jesus and her ministries have found novel ways to act on Pope Francis’ call to protect not just the environment, but the people who are most vulnerable to the environmental consequences of unsustainable business practices.
