World Refugee Day 2026

To mark World Refugee Day 2026, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Convention, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) has launched a global campaign inviting people everywhere to defend the right to seek safety and protection.

Protection is not something that any one person or organisation can provide alone; it is a collective responsibility rooted in everyday acts of solidarity and human connection. This campaign highlights the growing challenges faced by millions of displaced people as a result of closed borders, exclusion, and the denial of their most basic rights around the world.

In this same context, the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) has issued a powerful statement entitled “Together in Solidarity, Stronger in Humanity”, echoing the UNHCR theme for 2026: “Until Everyone is Safe”. Honouring the resilience of the more than 117 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, JCAM draws on the teachings of Pope Leo’s recent encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, reminding us that migrants and refugees “should never be viewed as burdens or statistics, but as brothers and sisters whose lives, hopes, and aspirations deserve protection and respect”.

In light of this, the Conference urges the global community to address the root causes of forced displacement and to promote policies that foster peace, justice, and inclusion.

At the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat (SJES), we join both the JRS campaign and JCAM’s statement. We encourage our global community to actively support these initiatives, reaffirming that humanity grows stronger when every person is protected, welcomed, and given the opportunity to live in dignity and hope.
