Catholic Leaders and Organisations Call to Protect Palestinian Life under Occupation
Catholic leaders and organizations worldwide have issued a grave moral objection to the Israeli Knesset's recent vote to expand the death penalty within occupied Palestinian territories in a powerful demonstration of faith-based advocacy. This legislation—which targets Palestinians while excluding Israeli citizens—has been condemned by signatories as a discriminatory institutionalization of state-sanctioned killing that violates the fundamental dignity of the human person. These leaders issued a warning, citing the high conviction rates of military courts and the lack of judicial safeguards. They argue that the law risks irreversible miscarriages of justice and further entrenches cycles of violence. Grounded in Catholic social teaching, which deems the death penalty "inadmissible," this declaration demands the suspension of international cooperation and trade agreements—such as the EU-Israel Association Agreement—until human rights and international law are upheld.
