Platform for Divestment from Mining

More than 35 faith-based organizations are promoting the Platform for Divestment from Mining, an initiative inspired by Laudato Si that proposes withdrawing investments from mining projects linked to social injustice and environmental damage, especially in the Global South. Divestment seeks to prevent churches and religious organizations from being complicit in human rights violations and ecological crimes by investing in funds or banks related to extractivism.

From March 19 to 21, 2026, the First Meeting of the Platform will be held in Rome, aimed at strengthening multilateralism and promoting ethical guidelines in the finances of faith-based organizations, in line with integral ecology and Vatican documents such as Mensuram Bonam.

Mining is identified as a key factor in the climate crisis, global inequality, and arms race, as it sustains consumption patterns in the Global North and geopolitical conflicts over control of minerals.

The meeting will bring together religious and social leaders from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and North America—such as Cardinal Álvaro Ramazzini (Guatemala), Monsignor Vicente Ferreira (Brazil), and indigenous leader Yolanda Flores—who will share experiences on the devastating impacts of mining in their territories.

The Platform is presented as a collective ecumenical action that seeks to transform the economic structures of churches, promote climate justice, and put communities affected by the extractivist model at the center.
