Letter of the Bishops of the Global South to the UN

Catholic bishops from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean have come together to ask world leaders to take action ahead of the United Nations General Assembly’s High-Level Event on Climate Action.

The bishops sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UNGA President Annalena Baerbock, and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell. In it, they urged governments to develop strong climate plans that meet the 1.5°C target, noting that global warming had already reached 1.55°C in 2024.

The bishops opposed approaches such as green capitalism and large-scale resource extraction. They called for fair climate funding, a shift away from fossil fuels, and better protection for Indigenous peoples, vulnerable communities, and the environment.

Inspired by Laudato Si’ and Pope Leo XIV’s message about caring for the environment, the bishops said COP30 should bring real change. They reminded leaders that the climate crisis is about justice, dignity, and the survival of our shared home, not just technical solutions.
