Türkiye – Earthquake inTürkiye and Syria, Bizzeti: “A tragedy within a tragedy” – MAGIS fundraising started

The earthquake that struck the area between Syria and Türkiye seems to have spared nothing and no one. Not even the Iskendereun Cathedral, where the apostolic vicariate of Anatolia led by Monsignor Paolo Bizzeti is based, was spared. Interviewed on 7 February by the microphones of Tv2000, he recounted a situation that is dramatic, to say the least: "The Cathedral has completely collapsed, the episcopate is unfit for use. There is no electricity. The situation in the city is terrible because a hospital has collapsed and another one is not fit for use. There is talk of hundreds of deaths, but probably thousands throughout the region'.

The MAGIS Foundation, an NGO of the Euro-Mediterranean Province, has launched a fund-raising campaign to support the population in difficulty.

Bishop Bizzeti had often spoken about the situation of Syrian refugees in Türkiye. Referring to them now, he speaks of a "situation of tragedy that has been added to other tragedies: among the families we assist as Caritas Anatolia there are many deaths". Bizzeti is also the president of Caritas Türkiye and closes the interview by talking about the launching of interventions to support the population: 'We are organising relief efforts and aid collections have already started so all offices are working at full speed'.
