Brazil -Jesuit Province launches Environmental Justice Report

The Jesuit Province of Brazil has released its fourth Social and Environmental Justice Action Report for 2020 and 2021. The document portrays the actions undertaken by the Province during the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the topics discussed was strategies to overcome this adverse moment and look for alternatives to continue evangelising. The delicate and serene look at those who most needed help shows us how vital the Jesuit Works' actions are in the country's five regions.

"This document is an important instrument of visibility for our apostolic mission. Through it, we hope to make people and institutions more sensitive to this new reality and establish new partnerships. Together we are capable of great social transformation, making a world where justice and fraternity walk hand in hand," writes Fr Mieczyslaw Smyda, Provincial of Brazil.

Throughout the 76 pages, the reader will find the Four Apostolic Preferences adopted globally by the Society of Jesus: To show the way to God through Spiritual Exercises and discernment; To walk with the poor, the discarded of the world, the vulnerable in their dignity, in a mission of reconciliation and justice; To accompany the youth in the creation of a future full of hope and to collaborate in the care of the Common House. Furthermore, it is possible to get to know the different activities of the Jesuit apostolates in Brazil, a wide range of work, from education to health. Parishes and Monasteries, Schools and Universities, Social Projects and Services, Spirituality Centres, among others, developed more than 80 initiatives.

For Father José Ivo Follmann, the Secretary for Social and Environmental Justice of the Province, the Report has an essential role in the network. Through it, one has an idea of the strength of the Province and the actions carried out by the sensitivities which comprise it; it is a didactic way of stimulating the work.

"The idea of the reports is to give an account to society of what the Jesuit Province is and what it does in the field of socio-environmental justice. Of course, the Report cannot cover everything that is done, but it gives an idea of the actions carried out," he added.

The Social and Environmental Justice Report will be printed and distributed among the Province Networks. It is an essential and ennobling moment of the work done daily by laypeople and Jesuits, generously giving themselves to carry out more just and egalitarian actions.
