Global – “Education is the core of Fe y Alegría’s work because we believe education is the key to social transformation”

This week on "Voices for a Cause," writer Julia Navarro talks to Daniel Villanueva SJ, General Coordinator of the International Federation of Fe y Alegría(Faith and Joy). With him, we look carefully at the international dimension of the 22 Fe y Alegría organisations worldwide, "working together to improve the mission as a whole."

In this chapter, Daniel emphasises that although "the core of the Federation's work is education, this accompaniment of the educational communities has led us to a progressive involvement in the rest of society". In Daniel's words, this occurs because "our concept of popular education is not only limited to the classroom of a traditional school but also the pursuit for social transformation".

In addition, Daniel goes into the main challenges currently facing the Federation, pointing to "diversity" on an internal level, having to coordinate a multitude of initiatives and models locally designed in response to specific educational needs. On the external level, Daniel cites "the positioning of the movement, sustainability, the global educational discourse and the incorporation and learning of new educational models" as significant external challenges.

Daniel and Julia also discuss the new horizons offered to the international movement by incorporating new Fe y Alegría centres in regions such as Asia or Africa, which "bring freshness and a renewal of the great educational questions". Daniel says, "What happens in this dialogue is very interesting because the Federation learns and is transformed by new projects and proposals that come from below, from the ground, from the roots".

Finally, Daniel talks about 'New Frontiers', a new focus of the International Federation that "brings together dimensions where Fe y Alegría is considering new ways of responding to, or of new populations or groups we are beginning to work with. A work that ranges from intercultural bilingual education in the Amazon to rural education in places where vulnerability is greatest."
