Peru – “Not a single death more” – Statement of the Jesuits of Peru

We share the statement of the Jesuit Province of Peru, in relation to the high political tension and violence in the country in recent weeks.

Communiqué of the Jesuits of Peru

12 January 2023

The Jesuits of Peru, together with all their apostolates composed of educational, pastoral and social institutions, reject the State's disproportionate use of violence in repressing the protests that have been taking place in different parts of the country.

We call on those who take advantage of the current circumstances to commit crimes or try to impose violent interests, not to delegitimise the Peruvian constitutional right to peaceful protest with their actions.

We also call on all our authorities to make decisions to find a consensual solution to the crisis, and to always put respect for life, God's supreme gift, according to our Christian convictions, first and foremost.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God" (Mt 5:9).
