Europe – The video. Bongiovanni at TV2000: “The ethicality of resources is important”

On 10 January 2023, Ambrogio Bongiovanni, president of the MAGIS Foundation, was a guest on the Tv2000 programme, "In cammino." Together with Giuseppe Notarstefano, national president of Azione Cattolica Italiana, they talked about divestment from fossil fuels.

The Jesuits of the Mediterranean province signed the 21 December appeal of the Laudato Si' Movement and Catholic Action to disinvest from fossil fuels. But "the discourse had already started years earlier," Bongiovanni explained to host Enrico Selleri, "out of a sense of moral and ethical responsibility towards the world's different realities. The MAGIS Foundation is a reality that focuses on 'ethical finance that promotes justice or at least does not favour the unbalancing of resources in the world," continued President Bongiovanni. "Ours, therefore, has been a choice 'of consequence': we have shifted resources towards funds that guarantee particular attention to our approach to reality. It is a question of coherence: you cannot promote justice and a sense of peace and then, at the same time, favour shady economies. So we looked at what the market could offer transparently: the ethicality of resources is essential; they serve to promote actions towards development and social justice."

In conclusion, President Bongiovanni also addressed the issue of awareness-raising: "We also focus on education for an integral ecology: raising awareness on these issues both locally and internationally is also promoting a change in institutional realities. The case of fossil fuels and their massive use has built an economy that, in the last 100 years, has consumed all resources with great difficulty for the planet to rebalance and readjust. The consequences are even more severe for developing countries, and this is an issue we should address more carefully."
