Statement of the Netwok of Jesuit Social Centers in Latin America and the Caribbean Regarding the wave of social protest and our continent’s weak democracies, December 2019. During the second semester of 2019 Latin America has been in a state of economic, political and social turmoil. In these last months, our continent’s democracies and their State apparatuses have shown their great limitations and shadow sides, such as systematic violations of human rights, the adoption of measures which foster the destruction of local economies, and the negative impact of mining and energy megaprojects both on territories and natural and cultural heritage. At the same time, we are witnessing a wave of popular protests expressing people’s wish not to resign themselves to a historical dynamic of exclusion. Read more…
