Annual Meeting SJES Rome, May 2026 – 17

Standing from left: Dani Villanueva (GIAN/R2E), Filipe Martins (JCEP), Rampe Hlobo (JCAM), Sergio Cabrales (GIAN/JIM), John Kennedy (GIAN/IE), Fr General Arturo Sosa, Jerry D’Souza (JCSA), Bernard Jado (GIAN/FM), Roberto Jaramillo (SJES), Julie Edwards (JCAP), Marco Emanuele (JESEDU), Agnaldo de Oliveira (CPAL), Rossana Mattei (SJES).

During the working sessions, participants shared their respective socio-political contexts and the challenges these pose to the mission of Reconciliation and Justice. Finding ways to coordinate and mutually support one another among the conferences and between them and the SJES in Rome was a challenge that was recognized.

Analyzing the possibilities offered by the survey data on the 4th UAP, conducted between 2024 and 2025, was one of the key points of the meeting. In this space, materials referencing over 1,400 integral ecology action initiatives developed across different apostolic areas (based on 39/100% of the responses) were reviewed and studied.

Participants, along with the SJES team in Rome, also dedicated a day to pray, reflect, discuss, and share (a discerned consultation) regarding the main advocacy challenges and objectives to be proposed for the next five years. In preparation for this consultation, a significant dialogue was held with the two education secretariats (Secondary and Pre-Secondary Education, and Higher Education). During the week, there was also an opportunity to meet with Br. Michael Schöpf, S.J., International Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service.

It is increasingly evident and urgent to take action in the face of rapidly diminishing resources: working in silos (whether isolated, personal, or institutional) is no longer sustainable, and joint action is indispensable for achieving truly transformative advocacy. This shared vision is reflected in the feature stories published by the regions, including Responding Together to a Wounded World (JCAM) and Collaborating for Justice and Reconciliation (JCAP).

On the afternoon of Thursday, the 14th, the presentation of the 2025 SJES Annual Report took place. Around 60 people attended in person at the General Congregation Hall in Rome, and another hundred participated in the online presentation.
