Deadline in Santa Marta: Leaders Face Pressure to End Fossil Fuel Subsidies
SANTA MARTA, COLOMBIA – Government leaders are meeting this week for the Santa Marta Conference, a high-stakes summit centered on the future of global energy funding. This event serves as the primary deadline for the Coalition on Phasing Out Fossil Fuel Incentives (COFFIS) to fulfill their 2023 promise to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies.
Despite a global pledge to shift toward transparency, progress has stalled. As of 2025, only one member nation has released a roadmap for action, while over $1 trillion USD continues to be funneled into fossil fuels annually. Advocates say that these funds fuel climate disasters and should instead be redirected toward affordable, clean energy.
With the conference concluding today, the pressure is on for member states to move beyond rhetoric and deliver concrete results.
