The Environmental Committee of Tocoa, Colón, demands that the government clarify the murder of the two leaders of the fight in Defense of the Carlos Escaleras Mountain and the Guapinol River.
The victims who were buried yesterday in the Guapinol village cemetery were identified as Aly Domínguez and Jairo Bonilla, who at the time of the attack on Saturday afternoon were riding on a motorcycle.
Through his twitter account, the doctor in Human Rights, lawyer Joaquín Mejía, stated that the current government is responsible for the death of the two environmental defenders because it has not suspended or declared null and void concessions given to the company Los Pinares, from Lenir Pérez and Ana Facussé, despite the existence of various factors.
“This company was granted a mining concession contract signed in September 2014 without having the respective environmental license. In turn, he used a falsified act of the open council in which the population supposedly gave its approval to his mining activities”, wrote Dr. Mejía in a series of tweets published in recent hours.
Mejía pointed out that the communities filed complaints with MIAMBIENTE, PGR and the Public Ministry without any results, despite the fact that they have been accompanied by a technical report required by MIAMBIENTE in which the damage caused to the rivers and within the core area of the natural park is verified. . Aly Domínguez, one of those murdered, was one of the 32 people criminalized by the mining company Inversiones Los Pinares and the State of Honduras for defending the Carlos Escaleras National Park against their illegal mining project. Territory defenders in the region face constant threats and harassment.
The ambassador of the United States in Honduras, Laura Dogu, also condemned the murder and joined the United Nations Organizations on Human Rights in Honduras and the country's own Secretariat of Human Rights, to carry out a due and proper investigation.
