Global – Caravan for Integral Ecology, Father Bossi: mining extraction must be reduced.
The coordinator of the Brazilian network of Churches and Mines, a Comboni religious missionary, talks about the second edition of their initiative in September: the Earth is not an infinite reservoir of resources to be taken without limits; recycle to reduce the consumption of raw materials. "God always forgives, nature never forgives."
The Season of Creation, celebrated in September, is also experienced this year by listening to the cry of the Earth, a crucial call to care for the planet that hosts all of humanity. The Pope has appealed several times, inviting us to listen to "the maternal heartbeat of the Earth, harmonizing the rhythms of our existence with those of creation, which gives us life." In the message dedicated to this season, Francis underlines how "economic policies, which favour scandalous wealth for a few and degrading conditions for many, mark the end of peace and justice." Aligned with this appeal of the bishop of Rome, the Rete Chiese e Miniere (RIM) [Churches and Mines Network] promoted a second Caravan for Integral Ecology. From 12 to 30 September, a delegation of five young people from Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Peru held seminars, events, and meetings to invite religious congregations, episcopal conferences, dioceses, and Catholic universities to integral ecological conversion and disinvestment from mines.
The Church, together with exploited populations
Accompanying the young people are Bishop Noel Londoño of the Diocese of Jericho in Colombia and Father Dario Bossi, Comboni missionary in Brazil, advisor to the Brazilian Episcopal Conference, and the coordinator of the Churches and Mines Network. The group began its activities in Madrid and Santiago de Compostela in Spain, passing through Rome, it will then be in Brussels, and finally in Tubingen, Germany. "The realities presented at the second Caravan for Integral Ecology denounce the exploitation and devastation of the Earth, the victims of environmental injustice caused by mining, which once again exploits the South of the world," says Father Dario Bossi, guest of the Vatican Radio studios - Vatican News. "The Pope - he recalls - invites us as a Church to stand with the victims of environmental and climate injustice, putting an end to this senseless war against creation."
