Latin America – Jesuits Share Progress in Aid to Victim Families in Haiti

After the 7.2 earthquake that occurred in Haiti in August 2021, the Society of Jesus implemented a major aid campaign in favor of the citizens through the Commission for the Intervention of Jesuits in the Great South - CIJS (Commission d'Intervention des Jésuites dans le grand Sud).

This Commission has been implementing a project to accompany families who are victims of the earthquake, as well as the construction of houses in the area known as "Grand Sud".

We share the latest news of this Commission and the work it has been carrying out:

Signing of the Protocol of Agreement between CIJS, CPAL and Red Javier.

For greater efficiency in the implementation of the Project, an important Memorandum of Understanding was signed on March 29 between the Commission for Jesuit Intervention in the LDS (CIJS), represented by its Coordinator Fr. Kawas Francos SJ, the Conference of Jesuit Provincials of Latin America and the Caribbean (CPAL), through its president, Fr. Roberto Jaramillo SJ, and Jenny Cafiso, director of Canadian Jesuit International (JCI) and representative of the Xavier Network.

The core team is back in the field

From Sunday, April 24 to Friday, April 29, the entire core team was once again on the ground in the "Grand Sud" accompanied by the local coordinators and promoters.

During this trip, the four intervention sites in the Department of the South and the Grand Anse were visited to see the general state of progress of the project and to verify the fulfillment of the guidelines and the collaboration of the local coordinators with the promoters, their relations with local leaders, etc.

Study and planning day in "Port Salut".

On Monday, April 25, a study day was held with the objective of facilitating a good knowledge of the project and ensuring its appropriation by the whole team, as well as clarifying certain administrative aspects and making an operational planning for the next three months on site, with the general project schedule.

Selection of beneficiary families

The families that will benefit from this project have already been selected. Numerous meetings have been held with them to explain the project and invite them to collaborate with the engineer and the master masons. At the same time, they are being prepared for the spiritual, psychological and ecological training phase and are invited to show solidarity in the construction work.

Training of masons

During the month of April, the project's technical coordinator held training sessions for the masons in Ducis, Sucreire Henry, Pestel and Corail. The objective was to train them in anti-seismic and anti-cyclonic standards, to help them organize the work to be done, to respect the deadlines for the construction of a house, etc.

Launching of the first phase of house construction

A schedule for the construction phase has been established with all project stakeholders. The start of the first phase of house construction is scheduled for the month of May in the four intervention zones: Ducis et Sucrerie Henry, in the Department of the "Sud" and Corail, in the Department of the "Grand Anse".
