Latin America – Jesuit NGO Publishes Books on Indigenous Reality and Training

SAIPE belongs to the Jesuit Province of Peru, and has been present in the Peruvian Amazon for more than 20 years, working with the Awajún and Wampis populations.

The Agricultural Service for Research and Economic Promotion (SAIPE), a social center of the Society of Jesus in Peru, is located in Santa María de Nieva (Condorcanqui, Amazonas), and has been working for several decades with the Awajún and Wampis population of the area.

As part of SAIPE's work in social development and advocacy, two books have been published to provide tools and information to support the work of defending the rights of the indigenous population.

The first is entitled: "Intercultural training program of the school for young leaders at the service of the Awajún and Wampis peoples". This is a training proposal that aims to strengthen the leadership of young indigenous people with vocation and practice of service to their peoples, in the horizon of Good Living, contextualized in the current times, with the challenge of facing the weakening of the formation of cultural identity.

This training experience was part of the project "Strengthening the organizational and leadership capacities of Peruvian native and peasant communities for the exercise of their rights and the peaceful and sustainable management of their territories", supported by Secours Catholique- Caritas France and Terre Des Hommes-France, and jointly executed by SAIPE and FEDEPAZ.

The second publication is entitled "Illegal mining and its impact on the health and culture of the Awajún and Wampis populations, and on the biodiversity in their territory in the province of Condorcanqui, Amazonas region". It is a study that provides documented and relevant information on the way in which illegal mining is developed, its conditions, the actions of the Peruvian State, as well as the reactions of the population in the territory and its negative effects on life, health, identity, local institutions and the future of the people, in order to support the actions of human rights defenders.

The study was developed by researcher Victor Pachas, in the framework of the project "Protecting Indigenous Peoples' Defenders and Promoting Land Rights in Selected Communities Affected by Land Conflicts in Peru and Nepal", which is supported by the European Union and the Foundation of Religious for Health (Spain).
