Bolivia – Agroecological fair held in the city of El Alto to commemorate 50 years of CIPCA’s existence

The Centro de Investigación y Promoción del Campesinado (CIPCA) Regional Altiplano, to commemorate 50 years of institutional life, organised the "Expo Feria de la Agricultura Familiar Campesina, artesanía familiar y medicina tradicional: for the right to food and food security", in alliance with the Autonomous Municipal Government of El Alto (GAMEA), the Coordinating Committee for the Integration of Peasant Economic Organisations (CIOEC Bolivia and La Paz), the National Soil Platform (PNS), the Regional Soil Platform of the Altiplano and Inter-Andean Valleys (PReSAVI), the Federation of Artisan Plant Producers and Related Eco-environmental. The event took place on Saturday 31 July 2021, at the Campo Ferial de El Alto.

The event was inaugurated with words of welcome, encouragement and circumstance from authorities of peasant, artisan, municipal organisations and private institutions; the original authorities of the Ingavi province made use of the event; Bernardo Huanca Choquehuanca, Municipal Secretary of Economic Development (GAMEA); Freddy Ampuero Aranda, Director of Productive and Artisanal Development (GAMEA); Alejandro Ticona on behalf of the National Soil Platform and its regional Altiplano and Inter-Andean Valleys (PReSAVI) and representatives of CIPCA. These authorities highlighted the promotion of family farming production and economic reactivation.

The event brought together more than 200 agro-ecological producers and artisans from the municipalities of El Alto, Calamarca, Colquechaca, Sapahaqui, Jesús de Machaca, Charazani, San Andres de Machaca, Batallas, Viacha, Comanche, Achacachi, Pelechuco and Tito Yupanqui from the Department of La Paz and producers from the Municipality of San Pedro de Totora from the Department of Oruro, distributed in 70 stands. The Expoferia showcased a diversity of products in different areas such as: different varieties of vegetables, Andean grains, native potato varieties; meat and dairy products such as llama meat derivatives, cheese and yoghurt; agricultural products such as bakery products made from cañahua, quinoa, amaranth, yucca and soya flours; camelid fibre handicrafts and ceramics; traditional medicine as an alternative to combat COVID-19 and floriculture.

In the Expoferia, a space was created where consumers could learn about the elaboration process involved in the production of healthy, fresh and nutritious food, as well as a space for the exchange of experiences between producers from different municipalities, as well as an important economic movement through the purchase and sale of products from peasant producer families and artisans.

The Interprovincial Civic Committee of the Department of La Paz, made a public recognition to CIPCA Altiplano for the work done in cooperation with the municipalities and provinces of the Department of La Paz, the public delivery of recognition by the president of the Civic Committee Lic. Oscar Boris Alcón Méndez, the director of CIPCA Altiplano Freddy Villagómez Guzmán.

The event was held with the aim of making visible and promoting family farming and agroecological production and at the same time contributing to healthy and nutritious food.
