Dr. Sandra Racionero-Plaza joins the Promoting a Consistent Culture of Protection Project (PCCP)
Last January the 5th 2023, Dr. Sandra Racionero-Plaza joined the Promoting a Consistent Culture of Protection Project (PCCP) of the global Society of Jesus.She joins as assistant to John Guiney SJ, project coordinator. Sandra Racionero-Plaza, an associate professor at the University of Barcelona, holds a joint PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). She completed her PhD as a Fulbright scholar and received the Academic Achievement Award from UW-Madison in 2011. She is a scientist in the field of sexual abuse, with experience of 20 years now, engaged in scientific research that has achieved important social impact, that is, that has contributed to reduce sexual abuse. Racionero-Plaza has held, among others, the positions of research director in the Faculty of Education at the International University of Catalonia, chair of the psychology department at Universidad Loyola Andalucía, and Ramón y Cajal researcher."Racionero-Plaza has been principal investigator of Spanish and international competitive research projects on the elimination of sexual abuse, as well as researcher in projects funded by the European Research Framework Programme."
Racionero-Plaza collaborates with the Society of Jesus at different levels. She is a research member of the Jordan project (UNIJES, Spanish province), which studies the structural causes of abuse in the Church and searches for solutions, gives training on successful actions for the elimination of abuse at Cristianisme i Justícia, and was an invited speaker at the International Symposium on Psychology and the Spiritual Exercises (Loyola, 2019). She is also a member of the Ignatian School of Spirituality (EIDES, in Cristianisme i Justícia) and of the group "Women of Ignatian Spirituality" (Cristianisme i Justícia).
As PCCP initiates a new stage focused on supporting Provinces and Regions around the world in relation to preventive actions and rigorous training, the presence of Dr. Racionero-Plaza will be central to ground such support also in scientific evidence with social impact. Racionero-Plaza initiates this mission “with much enthusiasm and gratitude. As a person of science committed to the overcoming of violence in human relationships, I deeply admire the Society of Jesus’ commitment to the elimination of sexual abuse. I have been working in this field for 20 years now, and I can say that the Society of Jesus is the only institution in society at large that has not only apologized for the harm caused but also, and most importantly and unique, has started with PCCP a very rigorous action plan to solve this social problem, putting in action several measures that are already in place all over the world to create a different future, a future free from abuse of which all society will benefit and other institutions will learn and build upon”.
