Latin America – Statement: Citizens’ Agreement for Peace in Mexico
Below, we share the citizens' statement of agreement for Peace in the Province of Mexico: "Peace is a joint effort at different levels and with all social sectors. It implies the sum of wills, the coordination of efforts, and the generosity of everyone to overcome the fear that affects us due to the inactivity and inefficiency of the authorities who have not taken care of their primary task of seeking unity, security, justice and peace of the country."
"Blessed are those who work for peace, for they will be called children of God." Mt 5,9
With a deep love for Mexico, we, the Mexican Province of the Society of Jesus, the Conference of Major Religious Superiors of Mexico, the Bishops Conference of the Mexican Episcopate, and all summoned to this meeting, are convinced that it is possible to build peace, that we can overcome the dynamics of violence and destruction of the social fabric, knowing that there are no easy solutions.
Peace is a joint effort at different levels and with all social sectors. It implies the sum of wills, the coordination of efforts, and the generosity of everyone to overcome the fear that affects us due to the inactivity and inefficiency of the authorities who have not taken care of their primary task of seeking unity, security, justice and peace of the country. This diagnosis, which we make our own due to its factual content, is echoed by the analyses that have nourished our discernment.
To reach this moment, we have walked together with men and women of goodwill from all over the country in an exercise of prayer, encounter, dialogue, and search for horizons of hope to build the Mexico we want and deserve. Where there is respect for life, the dignity of all people, and the rule of law and thus achieve the gradual overcoming of social inequalities in all their causes.
This agreement does not seek to promote confrontation nor revenge but rather the unity and reconciliation of the country so that we can all be protagonists in constructing peace and justice. No one should feel excluded, including families, communities, towns, cities, institutions, political forces, or the entire nation.
From the pain of the victims, which we make our own because the pain of one must be the pain of all, we want to say again that they are not alone and that in Mexico, there is enough energy, generosity, and intelligence to transform our reality and overcome this dark stage that has already done enough damage to all of us.
