Guatemala – Red Comparte complements the Participatory Guarantee Systems.
The Participatory Guarantee Systems, locally known as Los Sistemas Participativos de Garantías (SPG), are promoted as a strategy for organisational development, entrepreneurship and empowerment for rural producers throughout the municipality and to promote agroecology in the Cabricán municipality of Quetzaltengo department (Guatemala), specifically in the town of Buena Vista sector 2.
These are systems based on shared principles and objectives and adjusted to the social, geographical and human realities of the producers who develop them. They promote processes to generate confidence in agroecological products of social collective groups (APAPEF and MADRE TIERRA), applying the principles of ecological production with equity and social justice. As such, agroecological production in the municipality has a community organisation marketing the product in local peasant markets. To be certified as an agroecological producer, the requirements are:
- Do not harm nature.
- Conserve the soil.
- Protect biodiversity.
- Make good use of water.
- Proper waste management.
- Reduced emission of polluting gases.
- Promote food sovereignty.
- Carry out practices friendly to health and the environment.
On August 22, 2023, four agroecological plots were certified, namely: Mantenimiento el Buen Vivir- de aldea Buena Vista; Buena Vista de aldea Buena Vista; La Bendición de Aldea la Ciénega Chiquita and Las Cuatro Ases of Aldea Corrales. As a result of the effort and dedication of the local producers, Romeo Baten, Florinda Méndez, Florencia Clemente, Florencia Ramos and Juana López were recognised for their work in agroecology and for their constant struggle to rescue local or traditional knowledge in agriculture.
Since 2018, the RED COMPARTE (COMPARTE Network) has been accompanying ASERJUS in developing this SPG strategy, and ASERJUS’ sexperience with local producershas beennurturing the SPG COMPARTE.
