SJES publishes its annual report 2022
“I am
delighted to present this second annual report of SJES covering Jul. 2021 –
Aug. 2022, a year of abundant graces, countless challenges and myriad
opportunities.
The year began with the shocking news of the ‘death’ of Fr. Stan Swamy in custody in Mumbai, India, on 5 July 2021. Almost a year later, two more Jesuits, Javier Campos Moralesand Joaquín César Mora Salazar, were killed in Tarahumara mountains in Northwest Mexico on Monday, 20 June 2022. All three lived and worked among the indigenous people, spoke the truth and defended their rights. Stan, as I knew, was a man who ‘never wanted to be a silent spectator’ amid the dehumanized world. Like many other prophets, he was ready to face the consequences. While in prison, he asked, “Why truth has become so bitter, Dissent so unpalatable, Justice so out of reach?” This is the harsh reality today in many impoverished nations.
Almost four years ago, on 19 Feb. 2019, we received the UAP mandate. UAPs invite us to discern and see ourselves as partners in the mission of God to walk with the poor, accompany youth and care for our common home. The Jesuits and the collaborators in social justice and ecology mission in all 6 Conferences and Networks have been creatively walking through the difficult times, thanks to the inspiration of the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs).
In this annual report, we present glimpses of those creative, discerned actions and initiatives through the lens of UAPs. As you will see, the report is organized not according to Conference or Network activities but according to UAPs. These are the fruit of a process and a spiritual path undertaken by the Jesuits and collaborators in the mission of reconciliation and justice in this broken and wounded world. Hence, it must be seen not as activities of individual preferences but as all 4 of them together as the mission entrusted by Pope Francis to the entire Society of Jesus”.
