Latin America – Editorial: ACLO at the service of the Pueblos Indígenas Originarios Campesinos (PIOC) [Indigenous Original Peasant Peoples] and the Población Urbana Popular [Popular Urban Population] (PUP) in Southern Bolivia

At a time of spiritual reflection during the soon-to-conclude Holy Week, it is also important to reflect on ACLO's developing work among the Pueblos Indígenas Originarios Campesinos (PIOC) and the Población Urbana Popular (PUP) in the Southern Region of Bolivia. High social and economic vulnerability and the effects of climate change characterise our work but with significant potential for cultural, ancestral and harmonious living in the community.

It is also fitting to reflect on ACLO's message concerning Ignatian Spirituality, [the Universal] Apostolic Preferences and the Province Apostolic Plan. "ACLO is the Society of Jesus, and the Society of Jesus is ACLO", an affirmation supported by the institutional philosophy of ACLO in the framework of the "Spirit that inspires us".

ACLO, the Society of Jesus in Bolivia's social work, was established in 1966 to work alongside the poorest sectors of the countryside and cities of Southern Bolivia. ACLO shares the principles and values of the Society of Jesus worldwide, its way of proceeding and its charism of defending the Faith and fighting for Justice.

"Partners in a Mission of Reconciliation

(God, Man and Nature) and Justice".

Formulated in General Congregation 36 (October 2016).

ACLO has a way of proceeding, set of attitudes, values and norms that give meaning to its institutional work. It is centred on "deep personal love for Jesus Christ" and "in solidarity with those most in need", which it expresses simply and profoundly in the binomial of "Faith - Justice", described nowadays in terms of work for "Reconciliation and Justice".

This message animates the work of ACLO's collaborators, fulfilling their roles as Educator, Promoter, Mediator and Proposer, together with their voice, from the South in search of the Vivir Bien [living well] with the PIOC and PUP with whom we work: Guaraní Indigenous Population in the Chaco region, Quechua Population in Potosí and Chuquisaca and peasant population in rural municipalities in the Departments of Chuquisaca, Potosí and Tarija; in addition to the people of popular peri-urban neighbourhoods in the cities of Sucre, Potosí and Tarija.

In all cases, ACLO works and promotes support from three approaches: 1. Focus on Effects and Impacts; 2. A Culture of Peace; and 3. Care for the Common Home. With these three fundamental and strategic aspects of our work with the PIOC and PUP in the Southern Region of Bolivia, we will continue and ratify our support for their development, institutionally commit to the processes to advance and move forward in search of "Living Well".
