Latin America – Real life stories of migration in the classroom

A two-session training and exchange session aimed at teachers from FLACSI schools, in which, through real-life stories of people in situations of forced migration, we offer an update on the migration context in the region and some tools for awareness-raising work with students.

"...we believe that we have the mission to be bridges between the people who arrive and the people here. We want to promote in young people a culture of hospitality, encounter, and welcoming those who come". Cecilia Duarte, SJM Argentina

This is an initiative of the Jesuit Migrant Service of Argentina, Uruguay, Red Jesuita conMigrantes and the Latin American Federation of Jesuit Schools.

Below we share the full article published by FLACSI:

Forced migration remains a latent and worrying reality: thousands of people in our continent continue to be forced to flee their homes. The causes are increasing and intertwining, making their approach more complex; the conditions of the journey often put their lives in greater danger; and the attitudes of exclusion, violence and discrimination in the places of arrival by the citizens further worsen their situation.

In response to this reality, various works of the Society of Jesus on the continent continue to be committed to hospitality, highlighting and emphasising that forced migration affects people, human beings with a face, a name, a family and a story. Real-life stories allow us to see them with the eyes of the heart and feel them close to us as brothers and sisters.

We believe that schools and classrooms should be spaces of hospitality and transformation in the face of forced migration, recognising that teachers are in a significant place with enormous potential to promote processes of awareness and action with their students.

This is why we launched the workshop "Real Stories of Migration in the Classroom." It is a formative and exchange space aimed at teachers from FLACSI schools. Through real-life stories of people in a situation of forced migration, we offer an update on the migratory context in the region and some tools for awareness-raising work with students.
