Spain – Women on the move. International conference. Bilbao, 8 November 2022
On November 8, "La Jornada Internacional, Mujeres en Marcha" [Women on the Move, an International Conference] organised by Alboan, Entreculturas, Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes [Jesuit Migrant Service] and the Fundación Ellacuría will take place at Arrupe Etxea (Padre Lojendio, 2) in Bilbao. This conference aims to make the reality of women's migration visible and address it from a gender perspective. Furthermore, it will examine, in-depth, diverse women's voices, experiences, and testimonies and study the correlation between migration, gender and violation of rights.
The different migratory contexts confirm that as a consequence of traditional gender roles, many women lack access to their rights. This reality undoubtedly complicates and roughens women's migration processes, increasing their vulnerability and perpetuating inequity. Thus, the growing trend of the feminisation of migration and the double discrimination women migrants have confronted in recent years. Moreover, the invisibility of this reality and its consequences, such as human trafficking, labour and sexual exploitation, violence, etc., make it necessary to make visible and systematically denounce the injustice. Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness and mobilise citizens and politicians to defend migrant women's rights at their origin, during their transit, and on arrival at their destination.
This initiative also aims to promote a space for dialogue and collective construction from the voices of various women and advocates and to influence the defence of migrants' rights, mainly migrant women, with legal and political tools.
A presentation by Mary Tere Guzmán, Deputy Director of Alboan, will be followed by three round table discussions. The first will address "The reality of women in different migratory flows: Southern Border, Central America and DR Congo" through the presence of Itziar Ruíz Giménez, coordinator of the African and International Studies Group (GEA-GERI) and professor of International Relations at the UAM; Cristina Manzanedo, lawyer and expert in migration and member of the coordinating team of the ÖDOS Programme; Caddy Adzuba, director of AFEM and FPM, lawyer, journalist and activist for women's rights, children's rights and freedom of the press in DR Congo; and Mariana Zaragoza, a pre-doctoral researcher at the University of Deusto, and specialist in forced migration from a feminist and anti-racist perspective and part of the team, Red Jesuita con Migrantes en Latinoamérica [Jesuit Network with Migrants in Latin America].
The second round table, entitled "Building the future from equality: demands for the protection of the rights of migrant and migrant women", will feature Marie Lucia Monsheneke, co-founder of the FAMEK Elkartea Association, activist and agent of equality, DR Congo; Nilofar Bayat, lawyer, basketball player and activist, Afghanistan; Matilda Noriega, defender of human rights and territory, social communicator, artist, writer and designer, Guatemala.
And finally, the round table "The power of communication in the construction of alternative narratives" will feature África Baeta, journalist and presenter at EiTB; Teresa Villaverde, journalist, a coordinator of Pikara Magazine, and member of the editorial team of El Salto; Fabiola Barranco, independent journalist and collaborator of Eldiario.es specialising in migrations; Olfa Sendesni, Tunisian actress, member of the Gazte Konpainia team of Pabellón 6 and the Euri Artean Theatre Company.
