Spain – A tide of solidarity with migrants and refugees
A tide of solidarity with migrants and refugees swamped Pamplona on October 12, the day memorialised the forcibly displaced. The memorial day for accompanying the forcibly displaced was jointly promoted by the NGO Alboan, the Colegio San Ignacio, and the Centro Loyola de Pamplona.
The day began with celebrating the Holy Eucharist in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, followed by various sports and recreational activities at the Colegio San Ignacio. Then, at 1 pm, hundreds of people set off on a march through the city centre streets. Afterwards, a meal shared by more than 400 people, enlivened with music and dancing, capped the memorial celebration.
Carlos Moraza SJ, director of the Colegio San Ignacio, pointed out, "on this day, we address human mobility, from origin to arrival. In terms of origin, we will financially support theServicio Jesuita a Migrantes Centroamérica(SJM) [Jesuit Migrant Service of Central America] and, specifically, the SJM Méxicoand the Red Jesuita con Migrantes de Costa Rica[Jesuit Migrant Network of Costa Rica]. Furthermore, regarding their arrival, we will work on the reception of migrants arriving in our city through the Mambré network."
For his part, the coordinator of Alboan in Navarra,Javier Andueza, stated that "the number of people who are forced to leave their homes exceeds 90 million. This painful reality challenges us. That is why we want to promote [a culture of] empathy, welcome and hospitality". Andueza added, "Today, we at Alboan are focusing on Central America, which is suffering a historic crisis due to violence, poverty, lack of job opportunities, and fragility of democracy in the countries."
TheCentro Loyola de Pamplona also supported the initiative to give visibility to a new project that forms the MambréNetwork and other Jesuit social institutions. Ignacio Aranzadi, head of theCentro Loyola, said this project consists of "accompanying young people of foreign origin between the ages of 18 and 25 who live on the streets or in substandard housing and are at high risk of social exclusion."
