Global – 115th Birthday of Pedro Arrupe SJ
On a day like today, 115 years ago, Pedro Arrupe, the 28th Superior General of the Society of Jesus, was born in Bilbao (Spain). His life made a great impression on many Jesuits and non-Jesuits because of his deep commitment to "faith and justice" and the stakes he took from this motto.
Trained in medicine, he entered the Society of Jesus at age 20 and was ordained a priest in 1936. He was sent on a mission to Japan, a place that marked and defined him profoundly spiritually and where he lived through the terrible explosion of the atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima during the Second World War.
In 1965 he was elected Superior General of the Jesuits. In this position, he upheld and guided the reforms the Second Vatican Council promoted. The Jesuits' 32nd General Congregation articulated their commitment to advancing the faith that does justice in all areas of human activity.
An expression of their continuing concern for the most disadvantaged is reflected in the founding of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in 1980 when they saw the immense need of those forced to leave their countries to seek asylum. Today that need has increased exponentially worldwide, and JRS has been a light and support for thousands of families in many countries.
In 1983, Fr Kolvenbach SJ was elected to govern the Society of Jesus after Fr Arrupe suffered a cerebral thrombosis in 1981. Fr Arrupe died in Rome in 1991, leaving a profound mark on the Jesuits.
His Cause of Beatification has now been introduced, and testimonies about his fruitful life are being collected. Visit the website of the Memorial to Pedro Arrupe SJ
