Latin America – Vow of Poverty SJ: “The challenge is to be a witness…”.

Fr. Jorge Serrano-Ordoñez SJ, of the Province of Colombia, shares his reflection on poverty and what the Jesuit Vow of Poverty entails. He draws on his experience of over 52 years in the Society of Jesus.

Jorge is currently in charge of a shrine and parishes in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). Daily, he encounters a lot of poor people. "The waste of tons of food!" For him, food wastage is a great scandal, especially when poor people have nothing to eat. Asked about the Jesuit vow of poverty, Jorge thinks it is fitting that Jesuit Superior General Fr. Arturo Sosa challenges Jesuits to make a serious examination of conscience. The review is not just about things they have in their rooms but the kind of relationship they have with the resources at their disposal.
