Haiti : Looting and vandalism at the office of Solidarite Fwontalye
Dear colleagues, dear collaborators, colleagues and people of goodwill, I hope you are well despite the difficult situation in the country. I pray that God will hear the cry of the hungry, beaten and exploited people.
With great sadness, I must inform you that on Friday, September 16, 2022, around 7:00 p.m., malicious individuals broke the gate of the Jesuit Migrant Service / Solidarite Fwontalye Haiti (SJM Haiti) office in Ouanaminthe and took everything. We called the police, but they were overwhelmed as looting occurred at the town hall and the ONA office in Ouanaminthe. The roads were blocked and cut off, and people threw stones at cars trying to cross the barricades. Tomorrow we will go to the Solidarite Fwontalye office to make the legal report describing the loss of material goods and our files.
We have already shared the videos we have received on the SJM Haiti page and Facebook account. Some individuals have entered and looted stores, and houses in several cities, especially in Gonaïves, Port-au-Prince, Saint-Marc, Petit-Goâve and Les Cayes, schools, parishes and presbyteries.
We live in a situation where the rights and dignity of the most vulnerable are not respected. Despite this, SJM Haiti will continue to defend the rights of these people with the same zeal. But, be careful and remain calm. The country must overcome this crisis.
Counting on your understanding and collaboration for the necessary follow-up, please accept the assurance of my fraternal sentiments.
Yours faithfully
We share the communiqué of Fr. Pierre Edward Luc SJ, national director of the Service Jésuite aux Migrants (SJM Haiti), regarding the looting of the facilities on Friday, September 16.
