Chile – Jesuits in Chile Achieves International Accreditation in Abuse Prevention
The training and evaluation process involved two years with the international consultancy Praesidium. The accreditation will be valid for three years.
The Chilean Province of the Society of Jesus obtained the Praesidium Accreditation, granted by the consultancy firm of the same name, which is a world leader in abuse risk management. To achieve this accreditation, an independent team of specialists has determined that the Congregation meets all the required standards.
For two years the Society of Jesus in Chile followed a training process and a rigorous evaluation to define its responsibilities, identify best practices and assess the extent to which the previously defined standards are being met. Compliance with each accreditation standard was independently verified by Praesidium Inc. consultants, who confirmed that Jesuits in Chile complies with current international standards for the protection of children and adolescents, and that it is committed to acting responsibly and transparently in this area.
This accreditation is valid for three years and during this period they will ensure that they maintain the fundamental principles and strict safety practices that demonstrate their commitment to protect those they serve from abuse.
María de los Ángeles Solar, Director of the Center for Abuse Prevention and Reparation of the Society of Jesus in Chile, commented: "We are aware of the pain of the victims of abuse, and the damage caused not only to them, but also to their families and society, and it is our responsibility to work so that events like these do not happen again. For this reason, we decided to carry out this process, which has allowed us to review our practices and implement a series of measures that have raised our standards in abuse prevention. At the same time, this process has served to create tools and solve security gaps that our institution may have. We will continue to work rigorously and transparently, always keeping the victims at the center".
Praesidium is an international leader in abuse risk management and has helped thousands of organizations for 30 years. Praesidium Chile's executive director, Ximena Schencke, said the consultancy is "very proud of the great work done by the Company, and especially the Center for Abuse Prevention and Remediation (CPR). We are witness to the fact that at every step of our work together they demonstrated a genuine commitment to do everything in their power to prevent tragedies such as sexual abuse from recurring within the Congregation.
