Latin America – Fe y Alegría Brazil Social Center for Vulnerable Population
The recently inaugurated San Francisco Xavier social center will provide services to Venezuelan and Brazilian families in Boa Vista, in the border state of Roraima.
According to a study by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) published in 2019, Roraima is the state with the highest rate of social inequality in the country, with about 25% of its population living below the poverty line. Another critical situation in the region is the worsening migration crisis, as thousands of Venezuelans cross the border into Brazil and have a 64% lower chance of getting a job replacement compared to Brazilian hosts, according to UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).
Committed to the cause of migrants and fighting the humanitarian crisis in the region, the Fe y Alegría Foundation of Brazil expanded its operations in Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima, and inaugurated another unit in the region: the São Francisco Xavier Social Center.
Inaugurated on February 10, the center will serve Venezuelan and Brazilian children, adolescents and families in situations of vulnerability and social risk through shelter services, complete meals (breakfast, lunch, snacks), socio-educational and recreational activities, and follow-up of the beneficiaries' social assistance. Initially, the unit will serve about 120 people and, from the second half of the year, it will reach its maximum capacity to serve 200 beneficiaries.
The objective of the action is to facilitate access to assistance services and promote educational actions, so that the assisted people develop their autonomy and critical sense to build a fairer and more egalitarian society.
