Brazil – Brazil: Justice for Moïse

On January 24th Moïse Kabagambre, a young Congolese migrant working in Rio de Janeiro was brutally murdered. From the Jesuit Network with Migrants we join the CLAMOR Network of Brazil, the CNBB and RedeMiR to demand justice in this case.

The murder of Moïse, in addition to cutting short a young life with plans for the future and destroying his family, friends and community, is an example of the normalisation of violence focused on the most vulnerable populations, reinforced by hate speech, racism, xenophobia, against the extra-continental migrant population, both in Brazil and in many other countries of the continent.

As stated in the communiqué, "Guaranteeing the most basic rights of migrants and refugees is a constant challenge in Brazil. It will never be enough to reaffirm the importance of defending human rights in a country that unfortunately continues to mark its history rooted in violence".

We join in the demand for justice in the case of Móïse, those responsible for her brutal and unacceptable murder must be brought to justice. We also reaffirm our commitment to the defence of forced migrants and call for the responsibility of local and national authorities to promote discourse and practices that curb xenophobia, racism and the exploitation of forced migrants.

Our solidarity with Moïse's family, aware of their pain and loss.
