Mexico – SJM Mexico: Numbers to Explain Stories and Defend Rights

The Jesuit Migrant Service Mexico (SJM Mexico) has made available to civil society and anyone interested a section with statistical dashboards that provide accurate information on central elements of the reality of forced migration in the country and in the region.

The first part of these dashboards reviews the reality of the detention of forced migrants in the last ten years. The tool makes it possible to approach the data from different objective variables (years, nationalities, territories, etc.). Subsequent extensions will address the statistical reality of other key aspects such as Refuge or Deportations.

This effort offers keys to the interpretation of trends, but first and foremost it offers an objective approach that can help us in the exercise of analysis and advocacy for civil society organisations and networks, but also for the public authorities themselves, who are often unaware of or under-use the information they themselves generate.

Facilitating the integration of accurate data, and doing so with a perspective that allows us to analyse public and social trends and behaviours is in itself an advance and a service for the entire community of defenders and organisations interested in forced migration. But it is especially important in a consolidated framework of discourses that, on the one hand, dehumanise and, on the other, construct false myths or generate half-truths. It is also important to understand that the magnitude of these statistical claims are an accumulation of concrete stories of women and men in search of threatened lives and stolen dignity. These tools do not take us away from this, on the contrary, they allow us to affirm the reality we denounce in a direct relationship with the people we walk with. The numbers bring us closer to the stories and allow us to better defend their rights.
