Chad – In Chad, Discovering Oneself Poor in order to find Oneself Together Again

"The mission experience in Chad, which I would define as extraordinary, is accompanied by an ordinary, simple, personal and deeply transforming experience. A path of life that I am traveling day by day. Every time I leave, every day I live in Chad, I am confronted with the first poor person who is me. The place and the relationships bring out all my frailties, my fears, my limits. In this feeling of being small and fragile, all the grace of the many traveling companions emerges, with whom I advance step by step, a respectful and sustainable path studded with many "poor" like me met on the road.

The Covid-19 has helped me a lot in this regard, it has allowed me to feel part of a whole in which only together can we save ourselves, where it is necessary to open windows and doors, knock down walls and break chains, free borders and live to the fullest the African philosophy of "ubuntu", that is, I am as we are, I realize my deepest being only through the humanity of others!"

This is the testimony of Sabrina Atturo, Project Leader of MAGIS in Chad, where the Jesuit NGO EUM, together with the Italian missionaries present on site (Fr. Angelo Gherardi, Fr. Corrado Corti, Fr. Franco Martellozzo), the Jesuits of the West African Province (PAO), and the network of Italian volunteers and supporters, has carried out reforestation projects and wells to cope with the advancing desert, agricultural training and community gardens, socio-political training, schools and education. Sabrina now lives and works in the community of Le Bon Samaritain hospital complex, founded by Fr. Gherardi SJ, which offers health care to fragile and vulnerable people. For the emergency Covid-19 has activated a medical diagnostic training project for doctors and laboratory technicians.
