Guatemala – Promoting a culture of Equality
In Fe y Alegría Guatemala,
our daily efforts are oriented to provide equal education without
discrimination, that is why we seek to improve or generate new actions and
mechanisms that promote equal rights in all areas. To achieve this, it is
important to involve the educational communities, mainly educators and parents,
to inform, reflect and become aware of the inequalities and violence suffered
by girls and women.
The following are some
actions that promote a culture of equality in Fe y Alegría:
Promote the right to
education for girls.
Understanding the context
of gender violence is the first step to be a light for girls and boys, that is
why it is necessary that all the institutional and community family of Fe y
Alegría knows vital information related to this issue. According to the World
Bank in its article "Missed Opportunities: The high cost of not educating
girls" and in the words of Walter Lopez tells us that: "Women with
secondary education are more likely to have access to better job opportunities
versus those women who do not have secondary education", and that even
being educated "allows young women to move away from child marriage, early
pregnancy and to denaturalize the violence that is exercised against
them".
To fight against gender
violence, inequality and abuse it is essential to know what it is, why it is
important to be informed about it and why it is important to talk about it.

Educating in gender
equality
In order to break with the
patterns and paradigms of gender inequality, it is essential that families get
involved. Fe y Alegría not only promotes gender equality and equity in its
students, but also urges and promotes actions so that parents themselves change
their way of thinking in order to reorient educational practices within their
homes. With simple actions, parents can reinforce gender equity and equality at
home: share household chores equally; teach their children to express their
feelings; avoid using sexist language when addressing their children; and
encourage creativity, learning and curiosity without distinction between boys
and girls.

"To change we must
return to our past to restore, reconcile and forgive ourselves" in Fe y
Alegría Guatemala it is important to turn on the inner light of parents and
educators through restorative practices of "Crianza y Bálsamo de
Ternura" so that each and every one of those involved live in a culture of
light and thus educate girls and boys without violence in equal rights,
opportunities and affection.

Many times children raised
in violent environments do not usually recognize their own value; they grow up
with a negative self-esteem towards their own person and do not usually dare to
develop their abilities and skills. They also tend to develop in environments
of poverty, violence and abuse that they end up normalizing and accepting
irremediably. That is why it is important to develop actions that allow them to
develop their abilities, strengthen their self-esteem and develop a life project
so that they can freely choose their future.

The program La LUZ de las
Niñas, besides making the situation of violence visible, aims to empower girls
by improving their self-esteem, creating spaces for protection and education
inside and outside the school; strongly influencing to transform the causes of
gender injustice.
Fe y Alegría promotes with this and several other projects, to continue forming committed and conscious citizens who later commit themselves to the construction of fairer and more equitable societies in favor of girls and adolescents, being that LIGHT that dissipates the darkness of inequality.
