Venezuela – The reality of Venezuelan refugees and forced migrants demands the commitment of the international community
Jesuit organizations and the Red Clamor offer 20 recommendations to the international community to address the reality of Venezuelan refugees and forced migrants.
On June 17, 2021, the II International Conference of Donors in Solidarity with Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants will be held in Canada, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Several organizations of the Society of Jesus and the Red Clamor have addressed representatives of the States and delegates to this Conference to recall that 5.6 million Venezuelan people have been forced to leave their country. As organizations that accompany, defend and promote the rights of Venezuelan refugees and forced migrants, we ask to reinforce the commitment of the international community and insist on a democratic and peaceful solution to the crisis in Venezuela, because as long as this persists, migration will continue to be for many the only way out to safeguard their lives.
In the face of worsening and precarious migration and the closure and militarization of borders, we call for greater effort and political commitment on the part of all States to provide humanitarian assistance and protect the human rights of all Venezuelans forced to migrate, including their right to seek asylum. We urge States to adopt the UNHCR recommendation and recognize that the Venezuelan population is in need of international protection.
It is pertinent to insist on solidarity, hospitality and welcome as principles that allow us to recognize and enhance the positive aspects of migration and take advantage of its benefits. This Conference is an opportunity to commit the necessary resources to achieve international goals and commitments, as well as to provide a coordinated response among States and international organizations.
