Latin America – New Situation Analyses from RCS available on YouTube

The most recent Situation Analyses conducted by the Social Centers Network (RCS) of the CPAL are now available on our Somos Jesuitas YouTube channel. On the channel, you will find a complete playlist segmented by year, allowing you to view all the conversations and information spaces on current issues in Latin America organised by the Network. Live broadcasts of these analysis and reflection spaces will resume this December.

Below, we share the last three discussions that have taken place:

CHILE: 50 YEARS SINCE THE COUP, LESSONS FOR LATIN AMERICA? - October 31, 2023

Speaker: Rosa María Olave: Psychologist. Director of the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Program at Alberto Hurtado University, Chile Faculty of Law. University Lecturer.

September 11, 2023, marked 50 years since the coup against President Salvador Allende. Professor Olave analysed this historical event and its consequences in the southern country, including democratic fracture, human rights violations, and social fabric deterioration. She then explained the process of justice, forgiveness, and reconciliation after the dictatorship, examining how this experience can contribute to reflection on similar processes in our region.

AFROPERUVIAN EXPERIENCES. A REFERENCE FOR LATIN AMERICA? - October 12, 2023

Speaker: Ze Everaldo Vicentello García. Social philosopher. Representative of the Latin American Network for Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Democratic Coexistence.

On the occasion of Columbus Day, reflection was made on the Afro population in our region, specifically the Afro-Peruvian experience. The speaker addressed the historical inequality faced by this population and the limited impact of public policies in reversing this situation in Peru and much of the region with an Afro-origin population.

UNDERSTANDING THE REALITY OF HAITI - September 14, 2023

Speakers: Fernando I. Ferrán: Ph.D. in Philosophy. Researcher and professor at the Pontifical Catholic Mother and Teacher University, Dominican Republic. Gabriel Ambroise SJ: Theologian. Ph.D. in Anthropology. Bachelor of Philosophy. Delegate for Socio-ecological Justice.

In this analysis, the speakers explained Haiti's situation regarding the governance crisis and the state's inability to fulfil its primary functions, such as maintaining peace and controlling the territory. They highlighted the lack of attention this severe situation has received in the Latin American region, thereby hindering the possibility of reaching agreements on a solution for the country.

Finally, we invite you to participate in the new call that RCS, along with the CPAL Gender and Equality Group, is making. This time, the Situation Analysis is titled "Indigenous and Afro Women: A Space to Conquer." It will be an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and achievements of these groups in the regional context. Subscribe to our Somos Jesuitas YouTube channel to participate in the live broadcast of this new encounter.
