Bolivia – San Francisco university students demand government to put out fires in protected areas.
Young university students from the biology course at San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca are demanding that government authorities take action to put out fires, mainly in protected areas in the north of the country, including the Madidi National Park and Integrated Management Natural Area.
"It hurts us very much to see the sad images of the Tacana communities who have lost their homes (due to fires). We call on everyone not to remain silent because this is everyone's responsibility", said one of the students, pointing out that the protected areas and their forests are important for rainfall generation.
Not only fires but also mining pollution is damaging the indigenous peoples. "No gold, no coca" in the protected areas, said one of the banners. Mining contamination is damaging the forests and the families, as well as the coca plantations. They are deforesting, helping to increase the number of "chaqueos", said the protesters.
Faced with this situation, they call for a protest march this Monday night. They are also starting a campaign to collect humanitarian aid for firefighters and families affected by fires in the country's north.
