Mexico – Centro Prodh commemorates 35 years of defending human rights and building hope
The Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Centre A.C. celebrates 35 years of promoting and defending human rights in Mexico. Centro Prodh was founded in 1988 by the Society of Jesus to promote and defend the human rights of excluded, vulnerable, or impoverished individuals and groups.
In its 35 years of existence, Centro Prodh has accompanied various struggles through different administrations. Campesinos Ecologistas, Pasta de Conchos, Atenco and Ayotzinapa are some of the causes the organisation has accompanied together with other Mexican civil society actors.
Today, Centro Prodh remains steadfast in defending the rights of those who speak against abuses and impunity. Among these cases is the defence of Keren Ordoñez, a young torture survivor, who to this day is deprived of her liberty in Tlaxcala for a crime she did not commit. The organisation is also currently promoting the creation and proper functioning of the National Forensic Data Bank (BNDF), an indispensable tool to confront the forensic crisis of more than 52,000 unidentified bodies in Mexico.
Likewise, the Centro Prodh accompanies the struggles of indigenous communities and neighbourhood organisations that resist the militarisation of their territories inherent to constructing the National Guard barracks. At the same time, the Centre continues to provide free legal advice and representation to many individuals and families seeking truth and justice for the disappearance or execution of their loved ones in Mexico, a country wounded by the ongoing violence.
To carry out this work, Centro Prodh provides free legal services; it promotes educational processes with popular education tools and, increasingly, with technology; advocates with international bodies for the guarantee of rights; disseminates reliable information about integrity in the media; dialogues with the authorities on public policy proposals; it expresses its position together with other civil organisations; and, above all, it accompanies closely and insolidarity with those who, individually or collectively, claim their rights. Additionally, our house serves as a meeting place for organisations and other social actors and a refuge for groups looking for a place to stay while passing through the centre of the country. The Centro Prodh is thus an open house for those seeking justice.
