Peru – Wayra promotes participation and leadership of children and adolescents in Quispicanchi

Within the framework of the project: "Defending the rights of children in Quispicanchi", Wayra Association, a Jesuit social centre in Quispicanchi (Cusco), accompanied and advised for months the formation of CCONNA (Consultative Councils of Children and Adolescents) in the districts of Urcos, Andahuaylillas, Lucre, Quiquijana, Ccatcca, Ccarhuayo, Cusipata, Oropesa and Ocongate.

The CCONNAs are consultative and proactive spaces, whose members are democratically elected by other children of the same age. As part of their functions, they participate in the formulation of public policies on children and adolescents, submit proposals to a district, provincial, regional or national authority, and support the monitoring of the protection and promotion of their rights.

After supporting the formation of the district CCONNAs, Wayra provided them with technical support in their regular meetings and the development of their work plans, aiming to strengthen leadership and ensure that children and adolescents actively participate in the formation of the provincial CCONNA.

This goal was achieved on 29 September when the representatives of the CCONNAs of the twelve districts of the province of Quispicanchi met in Urcos for a meeting that culminated in the election of the provincial CCONNA and also allowed them to socialise the work carried out, identify the main problems affecting children and adolescents, and put forward work proposals to be implemented in the family, school and community environments.

This important event was led by the DEMUNA of Quispicanchi in coordination with the district DEMUNAs, the National Police of Peru and the NGOs Calandria and Wayra Association.
