Global – Ecclesial Networks for Integral Ecology met at the Vatican

From July 2 to 4, at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Vatican, the meeting of the "Alliance of Ecclesial Networks for Integral Ecology" was held, with representatives from Latin America, North America, Africa, Asia, Oceania and Europe.

The "Alliance of Ecclesial Networks for Integral Ecology", a network of networks from different biomes and regions of the world, held its meeting of discernment and reflection on its identity, vocation and mission, with the accompaniment of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, at the Palazzo San Calisto, Vatican, from July 2 to 4.

The event was attended by 45 representatives from seven biomes of the world, including some where they have been constituted as Ecclesial Networks of Integral Ecology: Amazon (REPAM), Mesoamerica (REMAM), Acuifero Guarani and Gran Chacho (REGCHAG), Congo Basin (REBAC), Asia Pacific and Oceania (RAOEN), and European networks, Canada and the United States.

Cardinal Michael Czerny, prefect of the Dicastery, highlighted that this meeting "shows that there are new ways of facing the challenges of integral ecology in various parts of the world, without wanting to homogenise it, make it the same in all parts or institutionalise it." He added, "We are together to listen, exchange, pray and be able to continue this path together, in this alliance of the Ecclesial Networks for Integral Ecology, strengthening a collaboration and deeper reflection."

FOR INTEGRAL ECOLOGY

For Mauricio López, coordinator of this alliance of Territorial Ecclesial Networks, this was a historic moment for the process that began at a founding meeting in March 2019 in Washington "around the reflection of the Amazon Synod for integral ecology, accompaniment to indigenous peoples and new paths for the Church."

In recent years, several virtual meetings have been held, due to the limitations imposed by the pandemic, and many joint advocacy activities in forums such as the COPs and contributing to the actual synodal process of the Church, until reaching this important face-to-face meeting that includes all this way to continue moving forward. "This face-to-face meeting seeks to bring the path lived, the different processes of the networks and platforms, some more consolidated, others under construction and others that have not yet begun, to define together where we want to go, how we respond to what the Pope is asking us and to be in constant dialogue with this Dicastery (for the Service of Integral Human Development)", says Lopez.

This meeting, watered with much hope from the voices of the original peoples, pastoral agents of the territory and ecclesial organisations, was carried out in an attitude of discernment and reflection to advance in consolidating the identity, vocation and mission of this Alliance of Networks.

ALLIANCE WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

The indigenous leader of the Amazon, Marcivana Sataré Mawé, said that "the Church in the world has been a great ally of the original peoples, promoting the international discussion on this reality." For her, "Pope Francis has been a great promoter of indigenous causes in the world, demonstrated in our presence here for this networking in defence of Mother Earth."

This meeting of the Ecclesial Networks for Integral Ecology, represented by the diversity of voices of the original peoples, laity, men and women religious, priests, bishops and cardinals present, expressed the importance for the Church in integrating the theme of Integral Ecology in its pastoral action and for the future of the planet.

In various interventions, Pope Francis recalled in his encyclical "Laudato Si", a source of inspiration for the work of networks, where he recognises that "everything is interconnected" (LS 137), needing actions connected for the care of the Common Home and the peoples who inhabit it.
