Latin America – SARES is invited to represent CPAL in creating the CELAM platform.

By collaborating with CELAM, SARES is recognised by CPAL as a driving force for socio-environmental awareness and a point of contact for creating a sustainable society.

At the invitation of the Conference of Jesuit Provincials of Latin America and the Caribbean (CPAL), Fr Sandoval Rocha SJ, articulator of theForo del Agua por el Servicio Amazónico de Acción, Reflexión y Educación Socioambiental (SARES) [Water Forum for the Amazonian Service of Action, Reflection and Socio-environmental Education], participated in an assembly held in April. The CPAL Assembly discussed the creation of a service platform for articulating ecclesial processes promoted by the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM). They also discussed socio-environmental issues related to water.

During the meeting, the members concluded that the platform would move to a second strategic planning stage, emphasising "Water".

The importance of the theme was emphasised in the creation of ecclesial projects: "The creation of the Peace, Democracy and Human Rights platform aims to articulate and stimulate other initiatives of the Latin American church towards the realisation of human rights and nature, promoting the care of the Common Home and the just and balanced coexistence of people with each other and with the environment".

The platform aims to develop a more comprehensive ecclesial character, provide an ecumenical dimension, and encourage more significant debate on issues that are evident worldwide. In this sense, the case of water initiated a stage of necessary action oriented by the most pressing challenges to address and monitor rights and conflicts related to the just struggle for water and sanitation.

This year, for example, the United Nations (UN) warned about the impending water crisis due to overconsumption and climate change. According to the UN, the urban population already suffers from water scarcity, which is estimated to double. In addition, extreme or prolonged droughts can affect the ecosystem.

By collaborating with CELAM, SARES is recognised by CPAL as a driver of socio-environmental awareness and a reference for raising a sustainable society. Furthermore, CPAL articulates and unifies services to strengthen network initiatives, which generated the opportunity [for SARES] to accept the invitation to participate in the Assembly.

A detailed report on the next steps will be sent later.
