HOSPITALITY: opening of love

This week the Chair of Hospitality was held in Rome as a space of formation. It explores the ethical, anthropological and juridical bases of the hospitality advocated by various actors of the Church and society with migrants.

Pope Francis as a witness to hospitality with displaced people.

The papal audience that participants had with Pope Francis in the Vatican today, as part of the programme of this Chair, has been in the news. According to the information published about this meeting, the Pope recalled the specific invitations of Fratelli Tutti. He identified the welcome as a fundamental element in forming fraternity and social friendship based on this "progressive openness of love".

Pope Francis recalled that this hospitality, welcome … is gratuitous and allows society to "integrate all its members, even those who have become existential strangers or hidden exiles" for various reasons". Thus, the culture of hospitality renews society as a whole, for it is not just about migrants, and does not depend on what they can bring, but is instead a matter of shared humanity, it is about a "human family". Pope Francis invites everyone to "promote a culture of inclusion and welcome to build a better future for all."

A Network of Hospitality in America.

From the Jesuit Network with Migrants: We want to share the information about this meeting with Pope Francis from the participants in the Chair held in Rome and about the Chair itself because it confirms the path initiated ten years ago in the Latin American and Caribbean region, which seeks to promote a culture of hospitality with a horizon of Reconciliation aimed at developing dignified processes of integration of forced migrants (Hospitality in the RJM).

This is an opportunity to invite you to consult and share stories, textsand materials that contribute to local education and communication processes, raising awareness and strengthening the culture of hospitality as an opportunity to continue growing as humanity in the context of migration.

As a Network with displaced people, local communities, and those we accompany, we have learned that hospitality is the key to initiating the process of individual and collective reconciliation of what has been broken by the experience of forced migration and exile. It enables the process of building trust, recovering hope and projecting the future.

"A profoundly human and Christian value that recognises the cry of the other, not because he or she is a member of my family, my community, my race or my faith, but simply because he or she is a human being who deserves to be welcomed and respected." Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J.

"Hospitality is a fundamental dimension of the human being and the earth".

The Chair of Hospitality in 2023 proposes that "Hospitality is a fundamental dimension of the human being and of the earth" and for the formative approach develops this proposal in five days where it seeks to deepen the anthropological, religious, and ethical profiles of hospitality as a culture. The main legal and economic challenges of the "hospitality system" were also discussed.

Here is the programme.

The Chair of hospitality (Cattedra dell'a accoglienza) is a training proposal offered to people in the Church who work in the field of hospitality, and is inspired by the legacy and charism of Don Francesco Bisinella, founder of Fraterna Domus.

Its objectives aim to provide elements that will allow us to move forward from a hospitality based only on "good intentions" towards a well-founded welcome that invites us to prepare ourselves adequately. For these reasons, an annual training experience is offered which seeks to "foster a social culture of hospitality, with theological and philosophical foundations for action. It is also intended to form a permanent "socio-ecclesial table" for reflection, debate and the exchange of experiences of hospitality and welcome.lexión, el debate y el intercambio de experiencias de hospitalidad y acogida.
