Brasile – Riverine Environmental Guardians Project starts a new class
On March 11 and 12, at the headquarters of the Instituto Educacional Amazônia Pará (IEAP), in Furo dos Chagas, in the Marajoara region between Amapá and Pará, another round of training took place in the Projeto Guardiões Ambientais Ribeirinhos, with the theme "Integral Ecology and Living Well" as the initial module. More than 32 young riverine people, 12 academic interns from the Federal University of Amapá, 11 visitors, ten community leaders, guests, future partners, trainers, collaborators and a support team of young guardians of the first classes participated in this educational moment.
The project is a realisation of the IEAP, which receives the support and partnership of the Panamazonic Ecclesial Network (REPAM), the National Observatory of Socio-Environmental Justice Luciano Mendes de Almeida (OLMA), the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP) and the Diocese of Macapá through the Pastoral of Communication (PASCOM). Each year a great and supportive network of people adds to this journey, with their contributions and observations, in strengthening and highlighting the care for our Common Home, planet Earth and, with particular affection, for dear Amazonia.
The challenge was presented to another group of young people from the riverbanks: to be the Amazon's guardians. To appreciate and uphold the dreams of their ancestors who chose to live in this biome and took care of the forest, rivers, and animals. To value and rescue the principle of abundance that the Amazonian biodiversity still gives us.
The Mandala of Good Living responds to a formation need. It nourishes our minds and hearts. And it encourages us to confront the continent's secular history of plunder and oppression. In particular, the cruel and hateful patriarchal practice that oppresses and eliminates women in society daily.
Following Paulo Freire's pedagogy, the meeting was filled with mysticism, group dynamics, games and activities. There were also thematic presentations, material preparation, dance competitions, songs, cirandas, breathing techniques and body postures. Each occasion aimed to cultivate the horizontal interaction and integration of all participants.
The Project will continue its training throughout 2023, interspersing thematic modules and specific workshops every month. The idea is always to add a portfolio of relevant and necessary subjects to empower the young Riverine Environmental Guardians increasingly.
