Mexico – Jesuits Mexico condemns military classification of Centro Prodh
The Society of Jesus in Mexico has issued a statement condemning the army's classification of the Jesuit social centre "Miguel Agustín Prodh" as a "pressure group", as well as other actions against the congregation. We share the communiqué:
We condemn the classification of the Centro Prodh as a "pressure group" and the military monitoring of religious, after the Cerocahui murders
In view of the publication of various military documents that refer to the work of the Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Centre (Centro Prodh) and the events in Cerocahui, the Society of Jesus in Mexico declares:
- That we support the work that Centro Prodh has carried out for almost 34 years. We reject that, in military documents, it is classified as a "pressure group". We regret that the public statements of the members of the Centre are subject to intensive monitoring, as are the statements of the victims they accompany. We recall that the civil work of defending human rights and accompanying victims is fundamental for the consolidation of the rule of law and democracy in our country.
- That we are outraged by the content of the military documents related to the Cerocahui case that have been made public. According to the information disseminated in the media, these indicate that the Mexican State had previously identified the criminal activities in the Sierra Tarahumara of the person who would later perpetrate the murder of our brothers Joaquín Mora and Javier Campos, which more than a hundred days later remains unpunished. If action had been taken, the tragedy would probably have been avoided. In addition, we express our concern that in the military documents issued in the days following the unfortunate events, instructions were given to monitor the public statements of the ecclesiastical authorities present in the area, in order to evaluate whether they were critical of the current government.
- It is very serious and worrying that military intelligence has not concentrated on locating the perpetrator of the murders, who is still at large, but has concentrated on monitoring the public statements of the priests.
The Jesuits in Mexico will continue to demand peace and justice. We bear witness to the legitimate work of our social work, Centro Prodh, which has contributed - as Pope Francis invites - "with courage and determination" to the defence, promotion and dissemination of human rights. We will continue to make our voice heard, always as respectful as it is firm, to promote reconciliation in the country.
