Latin America – Red Jesuita con Migrantes-LAC at the Summit of the Americas
RJM LAC joins other migrant and civil society organizations from across the continent in a joint communiqué with specific requests for the Summit.
Throughout the week the Summit of the Americas is being held in Los Angeles. One of the central issues on the agenda of the States will be an agreement on migration issues. Social organizations are attentive and active before the possibility of an agreement and are making concrete proposals that are based on the human rights approach and that demand transparency and collaboration with civil society.
The Jesuit Network with Migrants is present in Los Angeles and is participating in different events, following the discussions and trying, together with many other organizations, networks and groups of migrants, to contribute positively to the achievements of this summit.
As part of the Latin American Block (migrant and civil society organizations from all over the continent) and together with many other organizations, the RJM LAC has signed a communiqué with some demands and contributions to the discussion that governments will face and in the event that a regional declaration on migration and its causes is signed.
Among the demands are the following:
- Prioritize respect for human rights. The declaration cannot be below international treaties and agreements that are binding for most of the countries in the region.
- Guarantee the protection of vulnerable groups in the agreements. Complementary legal channels and humanitarian solutions are required, which also understand that there are vulnerability factors in the large universe of migrants, such as gender, race, ethnicity, age, etc.
- Establish regional protection systems for asylum seekers and international protection, based on a shared responsibility for the resettlement of the refugee population, humanitarian admissions, among others.
- The United States of America should not propose third country agreements or any other type of agreement that pushes the militarization of migration and non-compliance with international obligations.
- It must also stop collective removals under Title 42 that violate basic principles of international human rights law and eliminate the Migrant Protection Protocol.
- Ensure a commitment by the countries attending the Summit to strengthen the Systems for the Protection of the Rights of Children and Adolescents, which should guarantee the respect and protection of their rights, as well as the design and implementation of plans for the restitution of the rights of this population in mobility, and transnational protection mechanisms for children and adolescents regardless of their migratory status.
The construction of "a sustainable, resilient and
equitable future" for our hemisphere implies developing -from government
policies- real paths for the protection of human rights, the protection of
life, dignity and integrity of individuals and society as a whole.
