Colombia – CINEP/PPP Celebrates 50 years Fighting for Human Rights
With the slogan "50 years for life, justice and peace"
CINEP/PPP celebrates 50 years of research, popular education and advocacy in
defense of Human Rights with a new website, the production of a book on our
history, discounts on publications, virtual and face-to-face conversations, and
other activities.
In May CINEP/Programa por la Paz turns 50 years old. The legacy of this
Social Center of the Society of Jesus in Colombia will be celebrated throughout
the year with the communities it accompanies, social organizations and
cooperants.
The celebrations include the production of a book and face-to-face and
virtual activities that will show the history of the institution and give voice
to the peasants, indigenous peoples, Afro-Colombians, women, social leaders and
young people who, as five decades ago, are at the center of its research,
accompaniment, education and advocacy activities.
The anniversary will bring with it a new website for its publications and
multiple contents, including new virtual services. In this way, CINEP/Programa
por la Paz will seek to join the broad public that has participated in and
followed its work over half a century of history.
Part of the anniversary activities will include conversations and reflections of public interest for Colombia at a time when its society, especially excluded communities and victims, are demanding more than ever peace, social justice and respect for human rights, with guarantees for the exercise of democracy. On the other hand, the commemorative book will address various topics of research and current interest in a collective and intergenerational dialogue on the history of CINEP and its commitment for the coming years.
CINEP/PPP was born on May 30, 1972 as the Center for Research and Social
Action (CIAS) of the Jesuits in Colombia, "a work that helps us to
understand the context, to understand the reality in which we are
working," relates Hermann Rodríguez S.J., provincial of the Society of
Jesus in Colombia. "The Superior General at that time, Father Pedro
Arrupe, asked the Jesuit provinces in Latin America to have centers for
reflection and research on social, political and economic issues, so that our
action as Jesuits in the field of education, social ministry and parish action
would not be detached from the context in which that mission was being
developed," says Father Rodriguez in an interview with CINEP/Programa por la Paz.
Later, it became the Center for Research and Popular Education (CINEP)
and, in 2006, it merged with the Program for Peace and the Human Rights and
Political Violence Data Bank, enhancing the impact of its efforts. Since then,
it has been known as CINEP/Programa por la Paz (CINEP/PPP), an institution with
a territorial presence in 28 departments and 121 municipalities in Colombia. In
2021 alone, CINEP worked with 378 social organizations in the country. And in
early 2022 it was recognized by the country's Ministry of Science and
Technology as a research center in its highest category A1. In addition, as a
Foundation, it has the ISO Icontec 9001 quality seal.
In its 50 years of history, the institution has also suffered irreparable losses, such as the murder of Elsa Alvarado and Mario Calderón (spouses and researchers of the CINEP/PPP) and Elsa's father, Don Carlos, as well as that of numerous social leaders who helped in its journey.
