Spain – We are Amazonia, Let’s Defend our Common Home
Alboan and Entreculturas launch a campaign to mobilize citizens against climate change and in defense of the Amazon.
The planet is telling us enough is enough. The health and economic crisis resulting from the pandemic caused by Covid-19 cannot hide the persistence of other systemic crises, which, as always, unequally and more aggressively affect the most vulnerable territories and societies. The Amazon is one of these contexts.
The various messages of the Pope on the Common Home and in the apostolic exhortation Dear Amazonia and our allied organizations have been alerting us of the relevance of the Amazon rainforest for the environmental balance and sustainability of the ecosystem, but also of its fragility in the face of threats from military, commercial and industrial interests.
The Amazon struggles to defend itself. In 2020, a record number of land and environmental defenders were killed: 227. One in ten are women who also face gender-specific threats, including sexual violence. And there are many other defenders who, without being murdered, suffer other forms of violence for the simple fact of defending nature and the environment.
They are defending us all, including future generations to whom we also owe the care of the planet.
The Amazon is threatened by the advance of extractive projects that displace the population and increase deforestation. The direct consequences are environmental degradation and the disappearance of the culture and identity of the indigenous peoples known as guardians of the forest. But also at stake is the stability of the climate and the life of the entire planet. Our own life.
What can we do?
The Amazon is a wounded land that cries out to us. Indigenous organizations and movements, civil society, the Church and NGOs in favor of human rights and eco-social justice are mobilizing to protect the Amazon.
The NGOs Entreculturas and Alboan have joined forces to join this global movement and have launched the campaign "We are Amazonia, let's defend our common home".
In 2022 the 11th edition of our solidarity race "Run for a Cause" will raise funds for the defense of the Amazon and the rights of the indigenous peoples who inhabit it. We will support intercultural bilingual and environmental education, youth leadership training, alternative and sustainable economic promotion, humanitarian care and the protection of thousands of people in the Pan-Amazon region.
You can participate in any of the races we organize in 12 cities, or you can register from anywhere in the world in the virtual mode and participate at any time of the circuit, and thus support the defense of the Amazon. Visit www.correporunacausa.org .
You can also access the interactive exhibition Defensoras de la Naturaleza. Through the testimony of 10 women defenders of nature we can visualize how our modes of production and consumption are contrary to the care of nature, and endanger the sustainability of life around the planet.
The exhibition is available online at the campaign's
website; and physically, composed of 14 images linked to testimonial videos, as
well as other complementary materials. All contents are available in Spanish,
Basque, Catalan and Galician. You will
also find different ways to join our campaign, through social networks, with
our educational proposals and with your financial support.
Your participation is essential in the fight against climate change, the defense of the Amazon and the care of indigenous peoples. The defense of our planet, our common home, is a matter of all people. We are all part of the Amazon.
