Latin America – Network of Social Centers of the CPAL pronounces itself on the situation with migrants on the border of Brazil and Peru

On behalf of the Network of Social Centers of the Conference of Provincials of the Society of Jesus in Latin America (RCS-CPAL), composed of more than 43 social centers present in the region, including Peru and Brazil, its coordinator Piero Trepiccione, expresses his solidarity with the migrants stranded on the border between Brazil and Peru, making an urgent appeal to the Peruvian authorities to facilitate their access and to be able to continue their journey.

Some 450 migrants, mostly Haitians, have been stranded for eight days trying to enter Peru from Brazil through a border bridge in the Amazon, guarded by military and police, who prevent them from crossing the Integration Bridge of Acre. We understand that in Peru, since the end of January, the entry of travelers from Brazil, United Kingdom and South Africa, countries where new and more aggressive strains of COVID-19 have been detected, is prohibited; however, we ask to make this decree more flexible to allow the passage of these migrants so that they can continue to their destination.

The migrants, among them pregnant women and children, claim that they only need a transit permit in Peru, since their destination is Ecuador, the United States or their respective countries. For now they sleep in tents and schools in the town of Assis, on the Brazilian side of the border, in very precarious conditions.

We are concerned about the vulnerability of these people who, moved by the crisis unleashed by the pandemic, have lost their jobs and decided to migrate again. In this sense, we ask the Peruvian government to solve this situation by allowing the transit passage of these brothers, who are also exposed to diseases and only want to continue to their destination.

Trepiccione affirms that this action reinforces the sense of violation of the human condition and the need that these people have for a better destiny.
